Presentation

Seeds of opium poppy are regularly discovered on archaeological sites. The earliest sites are dated between 5300 and 2000 BC in Western Europe. These remains correspond to the most direct references of early poppy uses by man, before the first textual evidences of the Sumerian period. The main purpose of the project is to identify the initial centre of cultivation of the plant and to establish the chronological setting of its cultivation and dispersal during the Neolithic in Europe. This work would be based on a solid dataset of archaeological sites where seeds are identified as well as an ambitious program of radiocarbon dating. Poppy cultivation and its uses are subject to very active researches in many disciplinary fields (history, economy, medicine, geopolitics). This project would also make possible to concretely build a European interdisciplinary network dedicated to studying the history of the opium poppy since Prehistoric times in Europe.
