Reconstructing southern African Holocene palaeoenvironments through archaeobotany.

Abstract

Through the analysis of macrobotanical remains (wood charcoal and seeds), my research is interested in retracing the evolution of Southern African environments during the last two millennia and at a larger scale, during the Holocene to better comprehend the relationship between man and his environment. The major objective entails trying to discern what impact environmental changes had on Later Stone Age (LSA) communities taking into consideration subsistence strategies, socio-economic factors as well as other population dynamics. The LSA is a very important period in Southern Africa, marking the arrival of the first populations of herders/pastoralists in the region. Here, the study of paleoenvironments is essential in interpreting factors which influenced the migratory habits and settlement patterns of populations from East Africa down south.
