Emergence and Evolution of Ancient Agroecosystems in the Iranian Plateau, Central Asia, Caucasus and Arabian Peninsula and North East Africa: Biodiversity, Impact and Legacy.

KHARMAN (‘harvest’ in Persian) is a bioarchaeological database that aims at reconstructing past human-plant and animal interactions in Southwest Asia and Northeastern Africa based on archaeological, archaeozoological and achaeobotanical data from the Late Pleistocene until modern times. Three themes are specifically concerned: reconstruction of wild and domesticated biodiversity; understanding how agroecosystems adapted to environmental and climatic constraints; evaluation of the impact of agropastoral activities on the environment. The original project has been supported by the ANR French Research Agency. Database development is performed by the BBEES unit at the Natural History Museum of Paris and through the collaboration and expertise of a large consortium of researchers. The project is coordinated by Marjan Mashkour and Margareta Tengberg.
