My research focuses on the identification, taxonomy and interpretation of the small mammal skeletal remains from archaeological sites in continental and insular Greece, dating between the Early Neolithic and the Late Bronze Age. I am interested in the biodiversity and ecology of small mammals in the past, in issues of their skeletal preservation and taphonomy, the interaction of small mammals and humans, the history of small mammal commensalism and the impact of anthropization in the small mammal habitat. I have excavated in various archaeological sites across Greece and Cyprus (Avgi-N.Greece, Drakaina and Oiniades-W.Greece, Kantou-Koufovounos-Cyprus) and I have also pursued water floatation and heavy residue sorting as a small mammal specialist. My doctoral research was about the microfauna from Bronze Age proto-urban towns on Crete (Mochlos, Chania) and Santorini (Akrotiri) and its implications on the Aegean paleoenvironment, the natural habitats of the islands as well as the impact on the daily life of the inhabitants of these towns. For my post-doctoral project in the UMR 7209 (MOUSETRACK) I focus on the dispersal of the house mouse from the Fertile Crescent towards the Aegean and the Balkans and I explore the Neolithic migration paths towards this part of Europe using the house mouse as a bioproxy. The Neolithisation process, which affected the south Balkan Peninsula, is a complicated phenomenon and the dating of the earliest house mouse introduction to this area will help us uncover the origins of the populations, who transported it. I pursue my analysis using Geometric Morphometrics on the molar shape combined with Generalised Procrustes Analysis and Biostatistics.
